At the 5km F FIS race at Ylitornio in Finland at the weekend Posy Musgrave broke the magic 120 FIS pts barrier (119.47 pts) to earn herself World Cup qualifier. In the same race just 3secs behind Posy was Sarah Young which was a tantalising 2 secs outside a World Cup qualification standard (122.65 pts). Better luck next time Sarah! It’s great to see our first Women’s world cup start.

Meanwhile Andrew Young won the 1st stage (10km C) of the Junior Tour de Barents today. He beat Finn Hagen Krogh of Norway into 2nd place. Finn won gold & bronze at the World Juniors in January. Andrew will be wearing the red leaders bib in tomorrows 15km F.

Andrew Musgrave came in in 72nd place in the mens 15km freestyle event, gaining him a respectable 52 FIS points. His time was 36:59.1. Winner Ronne Andre Hafsaas (Norway) won the race with a time of 34:42.1.

In case you missed it, Andrew Musgrave was interviewed on the BBC Radio 2 Chris Evans show today at 6:45 p.m. Despite their grilling he managed to acquit himself quite well in explaining what nordic skiing was and why he does it.

Following the last post about Alex Standen getting into the World Cup rankings we have more good news – Callum Smith has broken that barrier at a race in Pello, Finland.

Congratulations to Simon Platt of Lakeland Club who is also joining this group.

These Finnish races also saw PJ Barron & William Newman score their best ever FIS points & Sarah Young continue with her challenge of obtaining World Cup qualification

Following 9 days of intense competition the 2008/9 Tour De Ski has completed with Finland’s Virpi Kuitunen and Switzerland’s Dario Cologna taking first places. This is Virpi’s second with of the Tour De Ski taking the first title in 2006/7.

In the women’s competition Virpi’s team mate Aino-Kaisa Saarinen took second place 7.2 seconds behind. Petra Majdic from Slovenia took third place. This leaves the women’s overall world cup competition open with Aino-Kaisa Saarinen

Club members Andrew Musgrave and Andrew Young are continued their world cup campaigns this weekend in the sprint races at Dusseldorf.

They both competed in the Sprint qualification races on 20th December. Andrew Newell qualified first with covering the 1.5km route in 3:03.77. Andrew Musgrave took 68th place 19.99 seconds slower and Andrew Young took 70th place 20.63 seconds slower. This leaves them both just over 10% off the fastest qualifier. continue reading…

Andrew Musgrave entered his first world cup event at Kuusamo, Finland this weekend. He entered the sprints and 15km Classic races and turned in good results coming in places 78/83 and 82/86.
