Huntly Nordic Ski Club

Nordic Skiing in the North East

Alan Campbell has contacted the club looking for some size 9.5 or 10 leather ski boots, ideally Garmont, Crispi, Alico or similar. Only a few years you could pick up a pair of these for a song in the bargain boxes outside most of the ski shops in Aviemore, but it appears now they have disappeared.

If you have a pair you would like to exchange for some cash contact Alan at alan.campbell@forestry.gsi.gov.uk

Conditions today were much improved. The lower trails were thin with wet snow 2-5cms deep, but most main trails were skiable with care on old skis. Upper trails were better with 5-10cms of sticky snow. Leids leap was skiable with care, I broke through to the rocks in a couple of places though. We skiied a full Haute Route, out via Norman’s Way, up Herring bone Hill and back down Leids Leap, Deer Track, and Classic Start. Temperature at car park was ~2C and along the Haute route it was just above freezing. We had a mix of sunshine and snow showers.

Today conditions were very variable, with altitude being the main factor. The lower trails had many bare patches, and thin cover (1-5cm) in places, but becoming slushy. Highland Fling was in good shape with 5cm throughout. On parts of the Haute Route, depths were up to 8cm, with a fresh dusting from a heavy snow shower this afternoon. However, Leids Leap was bare from the top down to the Hedder Wye junction.Temperature at car park at 2.30pm was plus 3. For Sunday, with more precipitation expected, it’s going to be a question of “wait and see” as everything depends on the freezing

The event had a big turnout with 38 skiers taking part from family groups to hot shot youngsters. While some skiers sped around others took a more leisurely approach but hopefully all enjoyed the day. The snow conditions just about held out & the trails are now discontinuous.

Thanks to all who helped or participated.
Tomorrow sees the first JDS session while in Italy a former JDS member will start in the final hill climb stage of the Tour de Ski. Good luck Andrew.

It has to be said that the trails are now broken, but there were still long stretches of skiable snow today — somewhat soggy in places, and not currently the place for one’s best gear. Some snow will undoubtedly survive overnight. Car park was very icy this morning and may be likewise on Sunday.

Apart from a few short, thin bits it looks like the snow at Clashindarroch should survive through Saturday, assisted by further compaction today on the main trails (thanks, Peter!). Temperature rose above freezing but not drastically so.

From Colin Miller
Thursday saw Clashindarroch’s deepest snowpack this season, with 10cm wet snow on the lower trails and up to 25cm heavy powder on the Haute Route. Unfortunately the snow was melting from the ground up although frost is forecast for Thursday night. Some trails have been compacted and some others have been “skied in”.

Andrew Musgrave is competing in this year’s Tour de Ski,starting in the prologue event today. He came in 28th place just behind Czech Lucas Bauer.
This OS probably the first time a British cross country skier has picked up world cup points.

Update Andrew picked up more FIS points on stage 6 of the tour coming in 23rd.

Colin Miller braved the  mud and ice in the Clash…

With temperatures on Thursday touching plus 10, the Clashindarroch trails have lost much of their snow. Although a compacted 5cm base was holding out gallantly here and there, there are long bare stretches. A few hundred metres survived on the Haute Route but even this was turning to slush, and the trail was running with meltwater. The Snowgoose and Timberline snowfields offered about 500 metres of continuous skiing on smooth but wet drift, but it’s a long walk to get there! A bit of a change from the past two Christmases, but there’s January and February to look forward to.

Good to hear the distant notes of the arriving snowmobile carried on the air this morning, Peter. I’ve reported the missing grit bin via the Council website. Found a piece of silver coloured plastic at the entrance at lunchtime. It looked like a battery cover from a large mobile phone, or similar device such a vehicle fuse box. I’ve left it on the post at the pole barrier.

So… even with tomorrow’s brief freeze it doesn’t look like there’s any real prospect of skiing over the next few days.
