<<<We are currently looking for ways in which our work can benefit genealogists and local historians and vice-versa. We are working on a database (but which is in its very early stages) that will allow details of individuals to be added. It is a very basic website, but it has great potential for mapping and keeping stats.

Any additions would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks for getting in touch and for the fascinating information and leads.
All good wishes,

More on Robert Moffat’s Descendants

The clan recently received a mail from Norway regarding another descendant of Robert Moffat, Berit Monn-Iverson…

I was born in Oslo, my mother’s family comes from West and Middle of Norway. My father’s family comes from Sweden, Småland and Värmland.  My father’s cousin Vivian Jahr had been doing research in Värmland long before me and gave me the opportunity to follow after her steps. She came in contact with the family Schützer .  This side of the family brings us back to the many nobilities and bishops families  in Värmland.  Cameen, Kax, Brunius, von Kiessel, Plenningskjöld , Liljebjörn and Schützer (a military family).

One branch  stops by Robert Moffat who died in Väsby, father to Margareta Moffat who were married to Niclas Björnsson Liljebiörn from Gillberga. Their son JEAN Nilsson Liljebjörn married MARGARETA (Maria) Ersdotter from Kila, their son ERIK Jeansson Liljebjörn married STINA Mattsdotter Fernlöf from Kila, their daughter KRISTINA Eriksdotter Liljebjörn married GUSTAF Fredrik Schützer from Långserud, their daughter LISA Maria Schützer married ANDERS Andersson from Stavnäs, their daughter CHRISTINA Andersdotter married OLOF Andersson from Eda, their daughter CHRISTINA Olofsdotter married LARS Olsson from Västra Fågelvik, who moved to Christiania (Oslo) where my grandmother DAGMAR Alvilde Ovidia Olsen was born.

After some years I found on the web links to Moffat Clan and other sites, and was excited about all I found.  Some years ago I went to Scotland and England to search more about Robert. I found his birth approval brief from Privy Council of Scotland, and this summer I found at Riksarkivet in Stockholm  this letter signed by Hedvig Eleonora, and Lorentz von der Linde, vid R. Marschens stelle   Gustaf Otto Stenbock, Amiral Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie, S.R. Cantzler Gustavus Soop, vid skattemästerens stelle

I think it was under “Ansökningar om Adelskap” (Skuldebrevs-samlingen) Vol 7. Plac. i mag. 6455.

Other archives I looked at are, Justisrev. Utslagsh. 1666 plac. i mag. 5447,

Nedrejusticrevisions protocoll 1666 plac. i mag. 5408,

Det odel ? Rådsprotokoll 1666 plac. i mag. 5492.

CLAN NEWS & LINKS:

1. MOFFAT THIS WEEKEND 21/22 OCTOBER – RUSSIAN CONFERENCE – very interesting –  Ian and Betty have previously attended events in which Count Tolstoy takes part. Topics discussed previously relate to stories of King Arthur & Merlin in Dumfriesshire (amazing how they get around, having appeared in Cornwall, Wales and Brittany it must be the Celtic influence).
This year’s colourful programme may be viewed on this link:  https://www.moffatrussianconferences.com/
2. They tell a good story or act it out well – OCTOBER 2017 TV drama series’LAST POST’ by Peter Moffat based on his own family ‘s (British Army) experience in Aden : previous dramas from this writer tend to relate to his own career as a Barrister  (‘SILK’) or family history (‘The Village”). As our Genealogist Colin Moffat points out, links to actors, authors and playwrights with the Moffat surname over a long period tend to be very strong particularly from the 1920s onwards and more recently  with TV’s SHERLOCK HOLMES/DR. WHO – a little research will show that in some of those not bearing that film or stage name, their family or birth name is actually Moffat or variant. Try “googling” it yourself on the internet and see what you come up with, you may be surprised! Mia in Moffat
3.  STAR WARS ACTOR WHO CAME FROM LOCKERBIE  this year got married in MOFFAT>>>>>>>>>
4. **With our (Telford-Moffat) family interest in motorcycles/trials – my husband Ian Telford several times times did the “End-to-End” (Lands End John o’ Groats) and for years was one of the British team competing in Anglo-Dutch event which has continued in both countries – latest being in UK Summer 2017 – On viewing Moffat links on the internet I came across a black and white picture of Scottish Trials rider T. Arnott Moffat and immediately followed it up with an exchange of e mails with John Moffat TrialsGuru/T.Arnott Memorial Road Run (see below) who coincidentally has been researching his  family tree and recently had a query cleared up by  Colin.  I asked John if I might put the photograph taken on the 1953 Scottish Trial on our web site and he has kindly agreed  and thank you – the Trials Guru web site also includes a recent picture of  T Arnott Moffat’s grandson riding motorcycle. *{Betty Telford, web site Admin.}*

MESSAGE FROM DAVID GORDON, REPLIED TO TODAY 4/9/2017:

Hi Betty
The Gordon family is related tenuously to the Moffatts via Lucy Ann Neva Moffatt (nee Hudson) who married Hugh E Moffatt. Lucy was my 2nd cousin 2x removed.
I have the Moffatt’s attached to my family tree and was looking for more information on Hugh Moffatt and the rest of the Moffatt clan.
I’ve recently been in contact with the Cobbolds who are tenuously related to the Tatton-Browns.
I wonder if there are any living members of the Moffatts or Tatton-Browns who would be keen to make contact.
I look forward to hearing from you.
David Gordon

Thomas Moffatt (c. 1702–1787) Scottish-born physician, studied at Edinburgh and Leyden, and followed his uncle John Smibert, the painter, to Newport in 1729. There he practiced medicine, collected art, and became librarian and director of the Redwood Library. He established a snuff mill and brought Gilbert Stuart, father of the painter, from Scotland to manage it. A member of a club of Newport conservatives, Moffatt strongly supported the strengthening of royal authority in the colonies, as this letter shows. During the Stamp Act disturbances he was hanged in effigy, his house was sacked, and his paintings, books, and scientific instruments destroyed. The British government compensated him by appointment as collector of customs at New London. In 1775 he took refuge in Boston with the army and then went to England, where he lived out his life on a pension of £200.  note: Buried St. George’s Hanover Square London 1787.

TEST PILOT ALAN MOFFET see story below of recent commemoration————————–

From BBC News On Line and highlighted by our Genealogist Colin Moffat, who was  at the Commemoration Ceremony:<<<The family of a World War Two pilot killed during a jet gala event returned to the place he is believed to have died 70 years ago.

Sqn Ldr Alan Moffet was due to perform a fly-past over Whetstone, Leicestershire, when his jet spiralled out of control and crashed in a field.

The fatal flight on 21 July 1945 was part of a test for the Meteor 281 aircraft.

A memorial bench in Blaby has been unveiled, next to the crash site.

The flight was part of an event organised by Power Jets – a British company set up by Sir Frank Whittle for the purpose of designing and manufacturing jet engines.>>>>>

Sqn Ldr Moffet’s granddaughter, Becky Jones, said: “We gradually looked into what happened on the day of his death and family mythology had it slightly differently to how a newspaper reports it.

“We thought it was a myth he was at an airshow but it actually was.

“I’ve got a copy of the RAF crash report but it doesn’t really show what exactly happened and why he lost control of the plane.”

Alan Moffet served as a pilot officer, flight lieutenant and squadron leader in the RAF before becoming a chief pilot for the Power Jets test flight at Bruntingthorpe.

Shirley Smith, crash eyewitness and chairman of Blaby Heritage and Museum Society, said: “I’m particularly interested because he was a courageous man.

“He was awarded The Air Force Cross (AFC) when he was a pilot officer and the AFC is only awarded to people that are really courageous but not in the field of conflict, which adds to the secrecy of it.

“He was not in combat but he was winning the war by developing a jet engine with Sir Frank Whittle.
